Shea G.
Hey Bryan
Shea G.
So you found the place :)
Bryan B.
Yeah, power of search was able to find the hidden email message with the link
Shea G.

Shea G.
People tend to show up rockstar late, so we're actually about 15 minutes from starting
Bryan B.
How long have you two cats known eachother?
Shea G.
We usually tell bad pirate jokes in the first 15 minutes
Bryan B.

Shea G.
I met Josh last year when he applied for a job with my design firm as a design monkey
Bryan B.
well look at him go
Shea G.
I think it was before he was 100% uber cool
Shea G.
well, paid to be uber cool at least
Shea G.

Shea G.
OK, I'll throw out one of my two
Shea G.
Bryan, have you heard about the new pirate movie coming out?
Bryan B.
nope
Shea G.
It's suppose to be so violent that it's rated Aaarrrrr...
Bryan B.
ha haha ha
Jeff M.
oh shit... i just lost IQ points reading that...
Josh S.
hey bryan, got my mail from my berry?
Shea G.
Do you know which Star Wars character is secretly a pirate?
Shea G.
Arrrr2d2
Shea G.
and Yo ho hoda
Shea G.
there's another few points Jeff
Shea G.
;)
Jeff M.
Hey, now _that's_ funny... damn the IQ points...
Bryan B.
yeah, that you'd be flying and catch up by friday. word.
Shea G.
I think Jason's rolling out tonight
Bryan B.
looks like a good password Arrrr2d2
Bryan B.
you guys all live in boulder?
Shea G.
Me, yes. Jeff, no.
Jeff M.
I don't -- St. Louis
Shea G.
And as of next week I'll be moving to Maine
Bryan B.
whooo hooo!
Shea G.
Boulder is great, but I gotta boogie on back to the Northeast.
Shea G.
The woods are calling to me
Bryan B.
I read that many young gen x gen y love the northeast
Apr 25
7:40 PM
Bryan B.
as apposed to baby boom wants to go southwest
Bryan B.
weird+
Shea G.
I grew up in New Hampshire, so it's where I gotta be
Shea G.
It's warm in the SW
Shea G.
Boomers like dry heat
Shea G.
our bones don't hurt yet
Shea G.
;)
Bryan B.
global warming and las vegas might be a dangerous mix, ha that's where I live
Jeff M.
OK, my turn for a pirate joke... What do you call pirate lovemaking...?
Jeff M.
Buried pleasure... arrrrr
Shea G.
oh man
Bryan B.
nice ;)
Josh S.
test
Shea G.
that's terribly great
Jeff M.
I was in Vegas in the 90s, Bryan... Did my grad. work at UNLV...
Bryan B.
neato, what grad department?
Shea G.
I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks for a bachelor partay
Jeff M.
English... did some courses in poli sci, history and theater, also...
Bryan B.
Jeff, why is your last name hyphenated?
Josh S.
Okay, food on the way
Josh S.
is this is? just 4 of us?
Bryan B.
bachelor parties are awesome here, let me know, maybe I can meet up with you
Jeff M.
McIntire is my wife's last name, Strasburg's mine -- we both hyphenated when we got married...
Bryan B.
Okay, cool. That is quite egalitarian
Shea G.
Jason Trout is supposed to be showing up, and there are usually a few straglers from 7:45-*;00 (our time)
Jeff M.
We went with that order because Strasburg-McIntire sounds like a small European country...
Shea G.
Strasburg on McIntire sounds like a nice estate
Bryan B.
ha like it. glad you did poli sci, that was my major at UCLA
Jeff M.
OK, not touching that...
Shea G.
Get those last few bad pirate jokes out, we'll start in two minutes
Shea G.
lol
Shea G.
just got that Jeff
Apr 25
7:45 PM
Jeff M.
I gave you too much credit...
Shea G.
It's been a long day
Pete R.
has entered the room
Shea G.
Hey Pete!
Pete R.
Hey guys!
Shea G.
Nice feature in Groovy Green Pete
Jeff M.
Hey, Pete.
Pete R.
Too bad it had my pic, though-probably chased people away
Shea G.
Pete is a pro furniture maker and fellow greenie
Shea G.
No, you look all rugged.
Jeff M.
Do you make sustainable furniture...?
Shea G.
Shea G.
You should mention it on the ol' blog Jeff
Pete R.
Jeff-yes locally harvested lumber, eco friendly finishes, etc
Shea G.
OK, so let's get this ball rolling...
Shea G.
Tonight's guest is Josh Spear, a self described Futuristic Cultural Anthropologist and coolster
Josh S.
<giggles>
Shea G.
His blog, JoshSpear.com, is a go-to spot for all things cool
Shea G.
He doesn't work for Nike, consults with big corporations and advertising and creative firms,
Josh S.
He was traveling all day and is seeing double, so alas, he didn't blog today.... Hi everyone!
Shea G.
And he loves sushi
Apr 25
7:50 PM
Josh S.
But, who doesn't?
Shea G.
Yup, he didn't blog about tonight's chat, but he will be making one afterwards
Shea G.
;)
Shea G.
With that, I will hand the stage over to Josh.
Shea G.
Give an introduction Josh, take as much time as you'd like, then we'll open the floor up for questions and general discussion
Josh S.
By the time I got home It was really too late-- but I'm glad there are a few people in here to get some conversations going...
Shea G.
Give it up everybody, for Josh Spear!!!
Shea G.
/cheer
Shea G.
/clap
Jeff M.
woo, hooo....
Shea G.
/stomp
Bryan B.
hoot hoot
Josh S.
Wow, now I'm supposed to talk...
Pete R.
yeah!
Josh S.
Thanks for the opportunity Shea
Josh S.
I've been working as a consultant for around 2 years now, blogging for more like 2.5
Josh S.
I often get the chance, and opportunity to speak to larger corporations specifically targeting youth culture
Josh S.
and since day 1 i've pushed them to be remarkable, and more conscious of their actions
Josh S.
Green is sort of at a tipping point into our everyday lives
Josh S.
more and more brands aren't just trying to leg up with a green product
Josh S.
they're actually starting to think about it in much bigger terms
Josh S.
Example:
Josh S.
Two weeks ago I was at Mcdonalds in Chicago
Josh S.
I was doing a presentation I call 'Brand Utopia'
Josh S.
essentially a crash course in, what would world (brand world) look like if it was made up of, well, my favorite brands
Apr 25
7:55 PM
Josh S.
because I want to live in a world of, tivo's and american apparel
Josh S.
not comcast and gap
Josh S.
and more and more of the youth generation feels the same way
Josh S.
our 'youthiverse', as I call it
Josh S.
consists of brands like that
Josh S.
mini cooper and jet blue
Josh S.
not ford and united airlines
Josh S.
essentially at the core of their strategy
Josh S.
they're putting the customers experience before the value of the company shares
Josh S.
jet blue took a huge leap
Josh S.
they said, leather seats for all, TV, and we're not even going to charge for it
Josh S.
So, standing in front of 50 suits last week
Josh S.
I clicked the slide to a picture of a globe
Josh S.
our earth, from space
Josh S.
and said 'how many people in this world want to change the world? for the better, or in some way'
Josh S.
80% of the room raised their hands, about the norm
Josh S.
and then i clicked the slide to a giant ? mark
Josh S.
and said "How many of you know how?"
Josh S.
and to no surprise
Josh S.
nobody raised there hands
Josh S.
a company that serves 50 million people a day
Josh S.
50 million opportunities to do something
Josh S.
wants to change the world, but doesn't know how
Josh S.
so much of the green-talk in my brand utopia is, what would the world look like if companies enabled us to change the world?
Josh S.
Language wise, thing that are 'global' are too big to be my problem
Apr 25
8:00 PM
Josh S.
so we depend on larger powers to make the change-- which is rarely done
Josh S.
there are the major .org's, but they're not even 1/10th as powerful as any of the fortune companies
Josh S.
in the ability to just, execute worldwide _______
Josh S.
so, what if they started executing change?
Josh S.
making small shifts in what they do, the food they serve, the type of message they send
Josh S.
because despite the villain bad rap mcdonalds gets
Josh S.
it's truely made up of a group of people, much like us
Josh S.
they just don't know how, or more importantly what to implement
Josh S.
Point of this to come full circle
Josh S.
in my brand utopia I talk about
Josh S.
What do we want
Josh S.
when it's products we want functional
Josh S.
we want limited edition
Josh S.
we want customization
Josh S.
but, we also want to change the world
Josh S.
and the companies that are enabling us to do that
Josh S.
which unfortunately are slim, like AA gave us an easy way to sweat shop free clothing, Toyota gave us a prius
Josh S.
we're becoming loyal to companies who say 'we know what you're thinking, and you can do this alone, we're here to help'
Josh S.
sure they make money, a killing
Josh S.
but it's in the products and services they provide that bring us closer to a green world
Josh S.
anybody home?
Jeff M.
yep, just digesting...
Shea G.
nope, at the office
Shea G.
;)
Pete R.
the lights are on.....
Josh S.
too bad I can't show slides in basecamp
Josh S.
:)
Apr 25
8:05 PM
Bryan B.
at home
Josh S.
so, I suppose it'd be fun to use this time
Josh S.
to talk about ways product related companies
Josh S.
can enable us, consumers
Josh S.
to make change
Josh S.
because I come from a product experience backround I'm always pushing people towards it
Josh S.
it's not hard convincing them it's 'cool'
Josh S.
or 'needed'
Josh S.
it's just implementation, and ideas for execution
Josh S.
or we could tell pirate jokes, your guys call
Bryan B.
so did they ask you for ideas of implementation and you are asking us to throw out some ideas?
Shea G.
I have told all my pirate jokes, so forget about that
Josh S.
I'm really just opening up the floor
Josh S.
to talk about eco, and green
Josh S.
in branding of product based companies
Shea G.
I have a question for people- do you think there is a risk in green being too cool?
Josh S.
Nike did 'considered', too bad the shoes are ugly, but they filled the demand
Shea G.
As in people getting burnt out on hearing about green?
Josh S.
and, at what point are things just green and not talked about?
Josh S.
Here in boulder, whole foods is a brand that serves up good food to EVERYONE... you're an outcast if you don't shop there
Pete R.
I don't think gren is too cool as long as the green nazis are kept at bay
Josh S.
half the people don't realize it's any better for their bodies, or for the earth
Josh S.
they do such a great job of enabling us to shop green
Josh S.
I don't even think people think about it
Apr 25
8:10 PM
Josh S.
they just positioned their product as better than the alternative, so what if it's wind powered!
Apr 25
8:10 PM
Bryan B.
well I totally agree that the youthiverse is into mass customization, and we all enjoy that...
Bryan B.
as for mcdonalds they should watch jack in the box out with salads
Josh S.
I guess you have to think
Josh S.
dream for a second
Bryan B.
I have always said that demand drives everything... if the companys give their customers a great experience, it will work
Josh S.
What if, the fortune 500 major companies
Josh S.
were the ones who changed the world
Josh S.
they were the ones who made awareness AND change about green issues
Josh S.
they have a heck of a lot more troops, AND face to face opportunites than any green orgs
Josh S.
we all know they're incredibly powerful
Pete R.
Josh-isn't that the ultimate goal? people not having to think if something is green or not because it is
Josh S.
totally
Josh S.
this is where I'm going
Josh S.
mcdonalds serves organic coffee, it's gross still, but organic coffee should be a norm
Josh S.
a company of that size could make shifts behind the scenes
Josh S.
and not even tell anyone, and change the world.
Bryan B.
that would be good if they did it behind the scenes versus trying to play up the "green" marketing
Bryan B.
it would land more authentic with the public
Shea G.
Yeah, but they are also driven by profit
Shea G.
Part of the value propisition in being green is getting to brag about it
Shea G.
nothing wrong with that IMHO at all
Apr 25
8:15 PM
Josh S.
it's such a balance right now
Apr 25
8:15 PM
Josh S.
people are afraid of 'trying to hard'
Jeff M.
Exactly -- what's the incentive to go green without branding themselves as such?
Shea G.
Whole Foods got 10X what they spent on wind power in press
Josh S.
but also afraid of being the last to the party
Shea G.
more power to them, next time they will spend twice as much ad get even more of a PR ride
Shea G.
Plus, I think people want to know who is being green
Josh S.
it's a class of it's own right now
Pete R.
I'm using the green card, but part of my decision was for my own health. Lots of fumes, sawdust, etc-not just profit
Shea G.
LOHAS folks are pretty hard to fool, the greenwashers get picked out pretty quick, espeically now with the green blogosphere all over green news
Shea G.
Right Pete, but big companies usually don't have that luxury
Shea G.
they have shareholders who their only job is to bring big returns
Shea G.
now, being green can bring in more green ($), but you need a strong leader to pave the way there
Pete R.
sure they do-for the health of their workers and then lower insurance premiums
Josh S.
I'd really like to think
Josh S.
companies can push green to the norm
Shea G.
You're right Pete, but it all comes down to $ for them
Shea G.
healthy workers = less to spend on insurance = more money for stock holders
Jeff M.
Would a company like Interface flooring serve as an example of what you mean, Josh...?
Shea G.
they don't do it because they love their workers, well- most don't. There are exceptions of course
Shea G.
Interface is great
Josh S.
I'm not familair with it
Josh S.
but, Toyota having a prius is
Josh S.
go back to the question
Shea G.
Strong green leader taking his company into a more profitable space (green)
Josh S.
do you want to change the world, yes?
Josh S.
how.. no idea...
Shea G.
Interface is a mega green carpet company
Jeff M.
Creating more energy-efficient processes, using recycled materials, etc., because there's an economic incentive for doing so?
Shea G.
BIG company
Apr 25
8:20 PM
Josh S.
the more brand that can make it easier on us, the better
Josh S.
I have a few friends
Josh S.
who are huge anti-sweatshop people
Josh S.
make their own clothing
Jeff M.
Eliminating wastes is both environmentally smart and good for shareholders...
Josh S.
it's a nice thought
Josh S.
but it's not realistic
Shea G.
You know what companies really need to do?
Shea G.
Offsets!
Shea G.
;)
Bryan B.
so how does a fortune 500 company go green without looking like they are "trying to cash in on the green movement?" I think Josh nailed with making it a clear directive that it is the new "norm" and they are ready to embrace change consistently
Josh S.
realistic is there being companies to go to for this stuff, capitalism is fine with me, if the offset is in positive change
Josh S.
well
Josh S.
two things bryan
Josh S.
first is
Josh S.
I don't think the green movement is anything new
Shea G.
they have to reach out to greenies first and foremost. They have to get the people who are the influencers on board with their greening
Josh S.
and I don't think it's going to be gone anytime soon
Josh S.
it's just a decision
Josh S.
I, so and so corporation, want to make a difference.
Josh S.
it's a call to arms, not a movement
Josh S.
because pretty soon, we can name companies that have a green aspect
Shea G.
It will be gone when it succeeds and it's not remarkable to be green, it's just what you do
Josh S.
I don't think the company needs to go 100%
Josh S.
they just need to offer a green alternative
Bryan B.
clear
Josh S.
so right now we can count a dozen companies with a green element
Josh S.
that have any global impact
Josh S.
if that
Josh S.
but I really think it's about a lifestyle choice
Josh S.
I don't want to wear sweat shop made clothes
Josh S.
but I also don't want to make my own
Josh S.
and I don't want to mess up the enviorment any more
Josh S.
so, I'll drive a prius, one step in that direction
Josh S.
I personally wouldn't be caught dead in one though :)
Josh S.
I think it's like a balancing act
Josh S.
because american ap' makes good clothing
Josh S.
it's not a hard choice to say
Josh S.
oh, hey look, eco clothing
Josh S.
it's... almost the norm now
Josh S.
they have what, 80 stores worldwide or something insane?
Apr 25
8:25 PM
Josh S.
but the same people that make their own clothes
Josh S.
revolt and ride a bike everywhere
Josh S.
awesome, truely awesome
Josh S.
but not realistic!
Josh S.
they're not doing that to be outcasts
Pete R.
fashion in clothing changes, do you think that they will still be fashionable 10 years from now
Josh S.
they're doing that because they have no other conscious lifestyle choice to make, prius is good, but too expensive, and kinda ugly :)
Josh S.
yep
Josh S.
I do
Josh S.
they're not fashion, they're not even eco-fashion
Josh S.
they fufilled a baseline need
Josh S.
we all need shirts, and underwear, and socks, and hooded sweatshirts
Josh S.
and now we can easily find them, sweat shop free
Josh S.
it's only fashionable right now because of how they branded it
Josh S.
sex, sex, sex
Josh S.
but they're really just providing the clothes in
Josh S.
food clothes and shelter
Josh S.
and a good friend of mine says
Bryan B.
yeah shelter!
Josh S.
"fashion is something you can put away in your closet, and 10 years later pull out and still feel comfortable putting it right back on"
Josh S.
these are t-shirts we're talking about
Josh S.
plane colored t-shirts
Josh S.
it's not going anywhere, I hate to make predictions, but they provided a baseline need for the soon to be eco-scared world
Josh S.
whole foods wins the prize for baseline in food
Josh S.
and the next person that steps up to the bat with eco-shelter, wins.
Pete R.
and for furniture?
Josh S.
totally
Josh S.
so think about
Apr 25
8:30 PM
Josh S.
all the baseline needs fast paced humans needs
Josh S.
right now I can only think of a few things a day I use constantly, that keep me in my eco-lifestyle
Josh S.
I have to break the line all the time
Josh S.
because I have to be a normal person
Josh S.
and not make my own clothes and ride my bike to the airport
Shea G.
Offset what you can't green up
Shea G.
sorry, couldn't help toss that in
Shea G.
;)
Josh S.
offset is a great idea
Josh S.
but still
Josh S.
doesn't get a pass into my utopia
Josh S.
it's an alternative
Josh S.
not a baseline item to the fast paced eco-lifestyle we all want to live
Shea G.
No, but it's an easy bridge
Shea G.
like you said, most of us are regular people
Josh S.
yup
Josh S.
totally
Josh S.
we all go in an dout of this eco-sphere
Josh S.
we use our recycled paper towels
Josh S.
but love sarin wrap
Shea G.
I won't tell you how many leaky Jetta's I've drien in my day
Josh S.
:)
Pete R.
I know I have a specialized job, but your fast paced and a durable item like furniture seem to be at odds
Josh S.
explain further?
Pete R.
fast paced eco lifestyle vs a piece of furniture that you will own for YEARS and hopefully hand down to the kids-two different concepts?
Josh S.
no, just two different implentations into life
Josh S.
one is a daily need
Apr 25
8:35 PM
Josh S.
food, clothing, shelter
Josh S.
one is.. a commodity
Josh S.
i'm a furniture nut, by the way :)
Pete R.
glad to hear that
Josh S.
george nelson for president
Josh S.
RIP
Pete R.
who?
Josh S.
Josh S.
how's everyone doing out there?
Jeff M.
Thinking... hard... may I play devil's advocate?
Josh S.
you betcha
Pete R.
thanks, I'll read the rest later
Jeff M.
Still thinking...
Apr 25
8:40 PM
Pete R.
this better be good Jeff (lol)
Bryan B.
I'm just hanging out, conversation is interesting just a little slow and tangential, not sure what to comment on.
Josh S.
I was thinking a lot about
Shea G.
Josh, did you tell the McDonalds folks any ideas for things they could do with those 50M customer interactions?
Josh S.
the 'perks' of being green
Josh S.
yeah
Josh S.
i don't know how much I can divulge
Josh S.
but they're willing, just careful
Jeff M.
Do we, in any way, trivalize the challenges we face by referring to ecological consciousness as a "lifestyle choice?"
Josh S.
<does the thinker>
Jeff M.
And I like the idea of encouraging consumers to "buy green..."
Shea G.
Is there room for fun in Green?
Josh S.
kermits fun isn't he
Bryan B.
i'm a big fan of fun
Pete R.
ask ms piggy
Bryan B.
all so serious and significant...
Apr 25
8:45 PM
Josh S.
american apparel is fun
Apr 25
8:45 PM
Josh S.
and sexy as heck
Jeff M.
And I certainly understand the appeal of fun, and don't think it's a bad idea to associate green with fun...
Bryan B.
word!
Josh S.
I think fun is an issue
Josh S.
but sophisticated is, too
Jeff M.
Damn... it's just not sticking with me tonight...
Pete R.
issue?
Josh S.
I mean, an element
Pete R.
absolutly-so why not frame green as fun now with fun left for the future?
Josh S.
the ski green challenge is doing that
Josh S.
Apr 25
8:50 PM
Jeff M.
I guess what I'm hanging up on is the element of consumption...
Josh S.
good point
Jeff M.
Are we saying "Go ahead and consume, but just do it differently?"
Josh S.
none of what I spoke about changes consumption, it just means they're consuming green, which is stilll.. consuming
Shea G.
If consumption is Cradle to Cradle, there is nothing wrong with it at all
Jeff M.
Exactly... and isn't that the mindset that got us into many of our current predicaments...
Shea G.
if it's C2C, consume as much as you damn well please
Pete R.
beat me to it shea
Shea G.
We've never had that mindset before Jeff
Shea G.
It's always been cradle to grave
Josh S.
Shea, shaina still waiting on an invite...
Jeff M.
Yes, absolutely...
Pete R.
Also, every one of our jobs has to do with consumption of some sort
Bryan B.
well there is something to be said for REDUCE, re-use and recycle
Shea G.
I just sent it Josh, the misspelled email, right?
Josh S.
yes
Bryan B.
I've been cutting back alot lately.
Shea G.
Screw reduce
Bryan B.
downsize and downsize
Shea G.
I don't want to reduce, I want to consumer green
Shea G.
;)
Shea G.
I kid, reduce is good
Shea G.
but it's not going to get us there
Shea G.
do less harm is still doing harm
Shea G.
Sustainability sucks.
Shea G.
who wants to be sustainable
Bryan B.
i'm a big fan of regenerative
Josh S.
thats the big point
Josh S.
stopping consumption
Shea G.
Lke Bill McDonough says "Who wants to say their marriage is sustainable"
Bryan B.
or abundance communities
Josh S.
is a heck of a lot more difficult
Josh S.
that changing what the consumption is
Bryan B.
we have more than enough
Shea G.
Regenerative is where it's at
Bryan B.
werd!
Pete R.
yep!
Bryan B.
now we are ahead of the curve
Jeff M.
And I'm certainly not suggesting we try to stop consumption... that would be a fool's errand...
Shea G.
Everyone back to the caves!
Apr 25
8:55 PM
Pete R.
osama? you in here?
Jeff M.
I think we're probably on the same page... that's why I brought up Interface...
Jeff M.
they set the goal of eliminating waste in their production process...
Jeff M.
and identified things like oil as wastes...
Jeff M.
With that goal, they still wanted to make floor coverings that people wanted to buy...
Pete R.
want to buy but can feel good about the decision
Jeff M.
